Series Highlight: Virgin River by Robyn Carr

Robyn Carr's Virgin River series takes place in the tiny mythical town of Virgin River, California. It is an excellent romance series featuring continuing, well-drawn characters that you fall in love with.

The first book, Virgin River, introduces the couple who act as the anchoring characters for the whole series: Melinda Monroe and Jack Sheridan.

The Virgin River series is an excellent, light read, perfect to devour over a weekend. The men are all either current or retired military, the women strong with well-drawn characters.

I highly recommend this series, although one caveat - they do need to be read in order.

New Fall Programs

BABY AND ME PROGRAM

Is class is designed to give parents and babies the time together to sing nursery rhymes and clapping hands and bounce. The babies can interact with others. It is a very good time to get your children started with programs. This will be on every other Monday starting on September 12th at 11 and will last 15 to 20 minutes.

TERRIFIC TALES FOR TODDLERS

This program is designed to teach toddlers to play well with others. This will be on every other Tuesday starting on September 13th at 11 and will last 15 to 20 minutes. I will be reading stories, singing songs and teach them movement activities. Toddlers are moving one step closer to school so they can interact with their possible future classmates.

A IS FOR APPLEBEE'S

This program is to promote reading. This program is designed to award children for their hard work. It runs a lot like the summer reading except we do not have classes for it. All you have to do is come in on or after October 3, 2011. I will make them a folder with their name on it and a book log in it. Come in or email me at programs@eccles-lesher.org to sign up. You can also email the book lists that they have already completed. Please remember to put their name on the email also. After every fifteen (15) books they read they will receive a coupon for a free meal at Applebee's. This will run though April 30, 2012. This program is for all ages.

GAME-O-RAMA

This program is for teenager to come and relax after a hard day in school. This will be every Thursday from 3pm to 5pm. This will be starting on September 15th. We have a lot of board games that they can play. But they are permitted to bring one from home.

MOVIES @ THE LIBRARY

This program is for all ages. Movies will be held on the third Saturday of every month at noon. Young children MUST BE accompanied by adult. Your child can bring a bagged lunch and a friend or family member with them.

Sometimes, justice isn't served by the justice system. You have to take revenge instead.

A group of women, all failed by the justice system, band together to make those who hurt them and their families pay.

There are currently 20 books in the Sisterhood series.

These books, all page turners, group together seven women who seek vigilante justice. As time goes by, the circle for which they seek justice grows. An exceptional series which just keeps getting better, I highly recommend it.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Kensington Publications for the Sisterhood beach bag and cover flats. They make the display look exceptional.

Crochet Class

The new crochet class/club met for the second time this week. They meet every two weeks on Saturday at 1pm here at the library. Everyone interested in crocheting projects, or in just learning to crochet is welcome to attend.

Below is a project completed in just two weeks by one of the people teaching the crochet class.

Instruction in both the basics of crochet and in advanced techniques is one on one.

Attention Horror Movie Fans

Friday, October 29th will be Horror Movie Night at the library. There will be two movies shown that evening starting at 4pm. The two films being shown: Wake the Witch and Ghosts Don't Exist are not rated but have been previewed by a library staff member.

Teens who wish to attend will need a signed permission slip.

Popcorn and beverages will be available, so come and join us in getting a fright for Halloween.

Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library has a new program beginning in October called The Babysitter’s Club for kids ages 11 to 15. This club will be meeting once a month for three months starting Saturday, October 9th, 2010 from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn the basics of babysitting and the importance of proper child care while having fun at the same time! Each participant to complete the total 6 hours will receive a special certificate! Sign up at the library!

And for teens ages 13-17 our October Super Saturday program is reserved just for you. Saturday, October 9th at 1 p.m. come down to show your artistic abilities by helping us paint some awesome bookends! Be creative for an afternoon and help us spruce up our stacks with your artwork!

Also on Friday, October 29, 2010@ 4:00 We will be having a teen movie night. It will run from 4-8pm. The movies are all thrillers. Since this is the month of Halloween.

StoryTime programs are back at the library! Come down to the library on Thursday, September 30th at 11 a.m. for an hour long program full of songs, a story, a craft, and even some nursery rhymes! This program is aimed at ages 1 through 4. Come enjoy the program and pick up some books to take home!

As school starts back up Eccles-Lesher is here for your kids! We have copies of textbooks from the elementary and high school for use in the library in the event a text book is left at school! Homework can still get done! Just a reminder!

Coming to theaters in September is the movie, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, which is based on the best-selling series Guardians of Ga’Hoole by Kathryn Lasky. New Club Starting Saturday, October 9th

We will be starting a new club right here at the library. This club is for children 11-15 years of age. The Club is called The Babysitter's Club. This club will get the students ready to babysit and understand what to do in case of emergency and understand the importance of caring for a child. We will be having this class once a month of 2 hours sessions only for 3 weeks. The first session will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 9, 2010. At the end of the 6th hour they will receive a certificate that they completed their full 6 hour trainer. They will be ready to get their first job.

The annual Bake Sale and Book Sale is under way. Thursday, August 12, 2010- Saturday, August 14, 2010. On those days the library has special hours. The Library will be open 9 am- 5 pm. Please stop and and buy some books. The prices are the following. Paperback books- $.50, Hardback books- $1.00, VHS Tapes- $1.00, Computer Supplies-$2.00. Starting on Monday, August 16, 2010, the library will be back to the normal hours of operation.

KDKA Day

KDKA Day was held, Saturday, July 17, 2010. The Meteorologist, Dennis Bowman, was here to talk about the weather. With the theme being "Make a Splash". Weather is a form of water. He had with him, his tornado machine , his friend Chester Drawers, weather box, and hand radio. When you Dennis on TV and he is visiting schools they always have a cake for Dennis. So that is what we did also. A special thanks goes out to Ginger Rodgers for the beautiful cake that she baked. Here is a picture of Dennis with his cake.

Summer reading party at the sligo pool

On July 31, 2010 we had our Summer reading party at the Sligo Pool. We had a special guest come and talk to the children about water safety. Ranger Danielle and Bobber the water safety dog from the United States Army of Engineering in New Bethlehem, PA. We would like to thank you for coming and going over all the importance of water safety. Also there was a lot of prizes handed out. The top reader of the Read to me group went to Payton Johnston, he is the son of Jason and Candie Johnston of Rimersburg. Who read 102 books. 1st through 3rd grades winner was Carissa Rodgers. She is the daughter of Ronald and Ginger Rodgers of Rimersburg. She read 45 books. The 4th through 6th grade winner was Katie Myers. She is the daughter of Jeff and Michelle Myers of Rimersburg. She read 70 books. This was a wonderful summer reading program this year. I would like to attach a picture of Ranger Danielle and Bobber and the kids from the party.

Series Highlight: Meg Langslow Mysteries

The Meg Langslow series by Donna Andrews is a collection of light, humorous mysteries filled with wacky characters, puns, and family insanity. The 12th book in the series, Stork Raving Mad is not in the picture as I was unable to pry it out of the hands of one of the fans of the series.

The series is introduced by Murder with Peacocks, in which Meg Langslow, a blacksmith by trade, is roped into assisting in arranging three weddings over the summer. Her mother's, her best friend's, and her brother's. Wedding mayhem, a seamstress whose son had to take over for her because his mother broke her arm, brides who continually change their mind, and a father who wanders around "helping" arrange his ex-wife's second wedding are driving Meg nuts, when she finds the body of one of the guests. Further books in the series bring Meg's eccentric family further into the limelight. I highly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys humor in their books. I also recommend that these books be read in order, as the family actions frequently depend on what has happened in past books.

It's State Budget time in Pennsylvania and once again public libraries are looking at cuts. Since 2008-2009 budget year Pennsylvania libraries have seen a drop of nearly $22,000,000 in funding from the state level. $22,000,000. Let that soak in. Even in light of such dynamic funding reductions most libraries around Clarion County and surrounding areas have been able to keep their heads above water. Free internet, free wi-fi, free children's programs, free meeting spaces, free adult programs, free assistance with genealogy questions, free help with online resources for jobs and other sources of financial aid, and a free place to get out of the heat or the cold depending on the season.

I know I'm not the only one tired of hearing about the financial woes public libraries face, not just in this state but around the country. Trust me it gets old, perpetually groveling and begging struggling local businesses, financially strapped individuals and library supporters, and constantly hounding legislators of our rising usage rates despite their lack of funding. With the type of atmosphere, services, and resources available, public libraries in America should not have to unceasingly plead their case for why they are needed and why they should exist.

Unfortunately we do, and unless we can get the unwaivering support of regular citizens to help us fight and make our voice heard this battle may well end in the worst way.

I'd like to take a moment to share some statistics and interesting figures with you that I came across recently. They help paint a mental picture of the place libraries hold in our society, a picture that is often forgotten or obscured.

Most public libraries provide free wireless Internet access for their users. Nearly 12,000 now offer free Wi-Fi. that's more than Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, or Borders. Library cards are about as prevalent as credit cards. Two-thirds of Americans have a library card. For many young people, the first card in their wallet is a library card. More libraries-5,400-offer technology training classes than there are computer training businesses in the U.S. Every day, 14,700 people attend free library computer classes - a retail value of $2.2 million. These individuals who comprise these statistics aren't no-name faceless strangers in far off places. They are your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers and relatives. I would be absolutely astounded if anyone reading this knows one person that has never stepped foot inside a public library of some sort. Some of my favorite memories as a child are of my mom pulling me in my red Radio Flyer wagon down East Main St. of Youngsville, PA to go to the public library when it was on West Main St. Think back to when you were a child. Do you have any favorite memories of your local library? Will your children have the opportunity to experience one? Your grandchildren, or your great grandchildren?

A library is more than just a building that stores books and provides computers to access Facebook. A library is a community hub. Libraries are usually located in a central position of cities and towns. There's a reason for this. It is a place where everyone is welcome. It is a treasure-trove with something for anyone and everyone.

Teen Event this Friday!

Teen Game Night ~ Friday, May 21st, 2010! Teens ages 13-17 are welcome to start signing up for an evening of games and fun beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. We will have XBox games available, the computer lab for online gaming, board games, card games and more! Get ready for a great summer filled with awesome books and lots of fun! Our once a week eight-week Summer Reading program will be held on Tuesdays from 1pm – 2pm beginning Tuesday, June 8th, 2010. We have a great summer planned with a special program on Saturday, July 17th, when weatherman Dennis Bowman from Pittsburgh’s KDKA News will be here at Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library with a Tornado machine and more! Not to mention our awesome end of Summer Reading Program Pool Party planned for Saturday, July 31st at the Sligo Pool! You definitely want to be involved in Summer Reading this year!

Eccles-Lesher Loves Pennsylvania Authors!

Returning to Eccles-Lesher for a second time is local author Kim Armstrong. Kim has been a registered nurse for 30 years. Living by Faith, Dying with Hope: A Nurse’s Story is her second book that takes you into the world of patients and families confronted with life and death, miracles and hope. Save the date of Thursday, June 24th at 7 pm to join us here in our Community Room for a great discussion as well as a chance to purchase a copy and get it signed by Kim. The library will have copies available for sale shortly, for those who wish to read her work before this event. This is yet another free program open to all, and a great way to show your support of libraries and local talent.

Spring Cleaning!
The library has been receiving a lot of donations this spring as everyone undertakes the fun task of spring cleaning at home. One type of item that would greatly enhance our current collection of materials are children’s DVD’s that your kids no longer watch! We are slowly trying to replace our worn out and often damaged VHS copies of children’s classics with the DVD format but cost is a large factor that inhibits our progress. We try to obtain as many new releases as possible for our patrons and often that leaves little funding left for replacing older classics.

Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library is selling Daffin’s Candy Bars!!! We have Milk Chocolate, Rice Crisp, Peanut Butter, Almond, and Caramel available for one dollar a bar to help support the library. Pick up a few to go along with the movies you can rent from us for 50 cents a piece, or to go along with a book you can borrow for free! Chocolate goes great with everything!

Rimersburg Parking Permits are available here at Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library. Cost is $25 for one year. Just ask at the Circulation Desk.

Don’t forget to take a chance on our 50/50 Raffle happening now through April 24th where you could be the lucky winner of some cold hard cash! The library, as well as our Friends of the Library group, is selling tickets for a dollar a ticket or 6 tickets for $5 to help raise money to support the library! We are avidly attempting to do what we can to offset the budget cuts the library has received this year from the State. Even if you do not win the Raffle you still help make a big difference in your community by donating to a great cause: free access to information and resources for all.

Don’t forget to stop in this Thursday, Friday or Saturday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to load up on materials at our Spring Fling Book Sale! We have hundreds of plastic grocery bags available that can be filled up with materials and we are only charging $1 per bag! We’ll have Bake Sale items provided by local library supporters as well on Thursday and Friday, and if any baked goods make it to Saturday we’ll have them for sale then too! Don’t miss this event!

Pennsylvania Author Returns for another Book Talk and Discussion!

Your generosity helps promote literacy, creativity, awareness, and so much more! While many choose to provide the library with a monetary donation and instructions on what subject matter to choose for each memorial, the library also accepts items donated in memory of individuals at no charge. Available now at Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library is a Question & Answer Center for help with your U.S. Census Questionnaire! Every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from noon to 5 p.m. a representative will be available in our Community Room. This service will be available through April 16th, 2010! We also have extra Census forms available by the copying station just inside the library.

Series Highlight: Lt. Eve Dallas series by J. D. Robb

This month's series highlight is the Lt. Eve Dallas series by J.D. Robb, aka Nora Roberts. The newest book in the series, Fantasy in Death, is the 30th entry in this long running series. Although it can be read as a stand-alone, many of the characters in the book are recurring and having read the others is a definite plus.

Fantasy in death takes the locked room murder mystery and takes it into the 21st century...or maybe the 22nd. The premise is interesting, and I leave it to the reader to decide on its probability.

Last Thursday we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday at our 11 a.m. StoryTime! Books, hats, crafts, cake and fun was had. We’d like to send out a special thank you to Karen Goss of Clarion County Promise for coming in and helping out! Remember StoryTime is every Thursday at 11 a.m. and we also have WiggleTime on Monday mornings at 11 a.m.

Next month’s big Story Time event will be Thursday, April 8th at 11 a.m. We will be having an Easter Egg Hunt that day here in the library for children ages 1-4. Come down and join in the fun!

On February 1st, 2010, the library started selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets to help raise money! Tickets will run one for a dollar or a sweet deal of 6 tickets for only $5! In a 50/50 Raffle the money earned is split down the middle, half going to the library and the other half going to a lucky ticket buyer! Stop in and tell your friends! Who couldn’t use a chance to win a little extra cash? The winner will be announced Saturday, April 24th during our Spring Fling Book Sale Event! Buy up as many chances as you can! Also be on the lookout for members of our Friends of the Library group! These lovely ladies have tickets for our 50/50 Raffle as well as tickets for subs from the Rimersburg Deli & Bakery. The proceeds from the sub sales help the library offset the State budget cuts we’ve experienced this year and enable us to purchase supplies for programs.

Series Highlight: The Special Crime Unit series

This month's series highlight is the Special Crimes Unit series by Kay Hooper.

The Special Crimes Unit is an unique division of the FBI, which uses psychics to investigate. The newest entry into the series is Blood Ties. (Seen on the bottom shelf, on the right above).

Blood Ties is the 9th book about this unit, and although it could be read as a stand alone, it makes frequent reference to the previous books in the series and in fact, is footnoted as to what book the events being mentioned were in. Although an entertaining entry in the series, it is not recommended as an introduction to the series. It is highly recommended that the book be read only after reading all the others first.

This winter we have been vigorously streamlining our collection of materials and saving the items we withdraw to include with our generous donations of items to hold a Spring Fling Book Sale! Save the dates of Thursday, March 25th through Saturday, March 27th to come down and take advantage of this three day, super cheap event! Our ever popular Buck-A-Bag policy will be in effect for all three days, allowing you to stuff as many great books, movies, etc. into a bag as you can and we’ll only ask you for $1 for all of it! If you have items you think people would ‘adopt’ that you would like to donate to our cause to raise money please bring them down! Many people already know about the Burial Database Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library maintains through our web site, www.eccles-lesher.org. Our Interlibrary Loan Librarian, Sherri Campbell, updates this database weekly with information she obtains through obituaries listed in The Leader Vindicator and The Derrick. If you would like to have an individual added to our database but did not have their information placed in either of those newspapers simply email the information to sherri.campbell@eccles-lesher.org. You can also mail us a copy of the information at the following address: 673 Main St., Rimersburg, PA 16248.

Come check out our updated upstairs playroom! We’re still working on finishing touches, but starting in February our Children’s Librarian Lesa Byers will be having Mother Goose Time at 11 a.m. on Mondays. This program is open to toddler age children and their parents so come on down and have fun! Also starting again in February is a community favorite, Story Time! Story Time will be held every Thursday at 11 a.m. So come get warmed up with a great story and some fun projects!

Also starting in February are our teen oriented programs. Saturday, February 6th, 2010 we will be holding a Board Game Tournament from 11 a.m. to noon. Come down and show off your mad skills! Stick around for our Poetry slam right after that from noon to 2 p.m. We will have judging set up and prizes will be awarded!

This winter we have been vigorously streamlining our collection of materials and saving the items we withdraw to include with our generous donations of items to hold a Spring Fling Book Sale! Save the dates of Thursday, March 25th through Saturday, March 27th to come down and take advantage of this three day, super cheap event! Our ever popular Buck-A-Bag policy will be in effect for all three days, allowing you to stuff as many great books, movies, etc. into a bag as you can and we’ll only ask you for $1 for all of it! If you have items you think people would ‘adopt’ that you would like to donate to our cause to raise money please bring them down!

Beginning February 1st, 2010, the library will be selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets to help raise money! Tickets will run one for a dollar or a sweet deal of 6 tickets for only $5! In a 50/50 Raffle the money earned is split down the middle, half going to the library and the other half going to a lucky ticket buyer! Stop in and tell your friends! Who couldn’t use a chance to win a little extra cash? The winner will be announced Saturday, March 27th during our Spring Fling Book Sale Event! Buy up as many chances as you can!

Another way to help support the library as well as honor a person you love, are proud of, or respect, is by taking part in our Memorial Book Program. While this program is utilized mostly for individuals who have passed away it can also be utilized to honor an individual for achieving a goal such as graduating from high school, college, joining the armed forces, serving a tour in the military, or any other number of honorable deeds! The funds raised by these donations help us to keep the library running and provide quality materials and services. Last year individuals, organizations, and businesses donated a total of $1,500 to this program. That amount could keep the electricity going at the library for 3 months! A little goes a long way at the library, so think about our Memorial Book and Memorial Brick programs the next time you want to do something special and unique to honor someone!

The United States Census is currently holding job testing here at Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library on Wednesdays. We have pamphlets available for anyone interested in possibly working for them. You can also find out more by visiting their website at www.2010censusjobs.gov or called toll-free: 1-866-861-2010. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old. A driver’s license is not required for some positions. We are looking into providing an information table soon and will provide more information on that in upcoming articles so stay tuned!

A Brand New Year!

It’s a brand new year at Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library and we are looking to make it our best year yet! We send out our thanks to all the patrons who utilized our collection and other resources last year. We would also like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have made donations, participated in our fundraising programs such as Adopt-A-Magazine, our Memorial Brick and Memorial Book programs, and those who have donated time and supplies for the library to hold programs and do special projects for the children of our service area. Without the support of the community our library would not be the wonderful resource that it is.

An Adult Book Discussion will be held on Thursday, January 14th, 7 p.m. The selection for this discussion will be “T for Trespassing” by Sue Grafton. The library will soon have copies available for a small donation of $8. If you’d like to participate sign up at the library!

Series Highlight: The Arcane Society series

The library has decided to highlight a series each month in our display case. For our first series highlight, we have chosen one of my personal favorite authors/series. The Arcane Society series is unique in my opinion. The author, Jayne Ann Krentz, write the series under three names, in three different time periods. The Arcane Society is a secret society dedicated to the understanding and controlling of psychic powers. The Society was founded by an alchemist in the 1600's, and the majority of the books focus on his descendents.

Under the name Amanda Quick, Ms. Krentz writes historicals. Her three Arcane books all take place during the Victorian era.

Under her own name, contemporary era books are written. Her newest book, Fired Up, is the start of a trilogy within the series. The Dreamlight trilogy will include one contemporary, one historical, and one futuristic book.

Under the name Jayne Castle, Ms. Krentz writes futuristic novels that take place on a colony world. Although the two books I have on display are not included in the Arcane Society series directly, they do mention the society, and the third book in the Dreamlight Trilogy is supposed to take place there.

The Arcane Society series is unique, entertaining, and is one I personally greatly enjoy. I have introduced a number of library patrons to this series and its author, and hope that our new display will introduce many more.
