Clickers is changing their meeting time

The crafter group Clickers! will be moving their meeting time from Wednesday evenings to Tuesday afternoon at 2pm due to the weather. This change was requested by the members who regularly attend.

Everyone interested in knitting, crocheting, or any other type of handicraft is welcome to attend.

And a reminder, if you have old needles, yarn or other supplies that you no longer need or use, Clickers would love to have them as "loaner" equipment for people just learning.

Hope to see you Tuesday afternoon!

Congratulations Nancy!

Our children's librarian, Nancy, has been awarded the Best Practices Award by the Pennsylvania Library Association for her Headstart Science Program.

Each month, Nancy creates and does a science program at the Rimersburg Headstart, a division of the Jefferson Clarion County Headstart. The program is based on the educational standards for the state of Pennsylvania. The program is aimed at getting children to think about the world around them, how things work, and why certain things happen. The program also includes materials for parents to take home continue the projects and materials. The projects/experiments utilize everyday materials, making it extremely low-cost.

The children greatly enjoy this program, which helps introduce them to science and the experimental method.

The award will be presented to Nancy in Harrisburg on April 1, 2009.

Updates from Eccles-Lesher!

Come check out our Christmas tree in the entrance of the library! This tree is decked out with the best kind of ornaments around: children from our programs! OK, so the kids themselves aren’t hanging on the tree, but little handmade ornaments with their pictures are! If you know any kids that go to East Brady Headstart, Rimersburg Headstart, Pre-K Counts in Sligo, Helping Hands in Sligo, or the library’s Storytime and Wiggle Time, come see if you can find them on our tree! Thanks to all the great kids who participate in our programs!

Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library would like to thank all the patrons, organizations, and businesses that have shown us support during 2008, our 40th anniversary year. We’ve made a lot of progress at the library and we hope to continue this upward trend, even in these strained economic times. Just to show how much we appreciate everyone’s help and patronage, the week of December 15th through December 20th will be Patron Appreciation Week! We will be offering our ever-popular coffee bar during our hours of operation. Stop in for a hot cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and enjoy while you read the local news or check out a magazine. We will also have two of our awesome fine deals going that week. For every $1 you put toward any fines you currently have, we will take $2 worth of fines off your account! Also! If you bring in any overdue materials during the week of the 15th through the 20th we won’t charge you the fines due on those items! These are really sweet deals! Start off 2009 right by clearing all your fines at the library, then have a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate to celebrate on us!

If you’re between the ages of 13 and 17 and like to play games of all kinds, you should pick up a permission slip to attend our Teen Game Night here at the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library on Friday, December 19th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. We’re closing down the library at 5 p.m. to give teens the run of the place! Figuratively speaking that is! All 10 computers in our computer lab will be open for teens to play. We’ll have an XBox 360 set up with Rockband 2 and possibly other games throughout the evening. Board games, various card games like Magic, D&D, snacks, and no cranky adults telling you to shush!!! Space is limited for this event so pick up a permission slip which must be signed by a parent or guardian before attending. Any questions just call Rachel or Sharon at 473-3800!

Speaking of games, every Wednesday the library offers Guitar Hero 3 or Rockband 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for pre-teens and teens ages 10-17. Thursdays are Halo 3 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you enjoy playing against other people in person come on down to the library community room where we project the game up on the wall. Bigger is better! Permission slips are required for these activities, so make sure to pick up a slip and get it signed by a parent or guardian!

Teen Book Discussion Group – Lit and Latte on Monday, December 22nd at 3:30 p.m. at the library: Ever wondered what would happen if some catastrophic natural disaster were to happen on a global scale? Author Susan B. Pfeffer takes on this grave topic in her young adult novel, Life as We Knew It. This book follows the story of Pennsylvania teenager Miranda whose life is turned upside down when a meteor hits the moon, pushing it closer to the earth. This seemingly insignificant event ends up causing all kinds of havoc including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcano eruptions, food and gas shortages, along with extreme weather changes. Follow Miranda’s day-by-day journal entries through this thought-provoking and engaging story. Pick up a copy of this book at the library and come join the discussion!

Other programs running through the rest of December:

Wiggle Time every Monday at 11 AM with Judy Bashline! – One hour of supervised play time for children up to five years old. This is a great time for them to play with other children and make new friends! Monday, December 22nd will focus on blocks, while Monday December 29th will be geared toward toys!

Storytime every Thursday at 1 PM with Nancy Shanafelt and Judy Bashline – A 45-60 minute program for 3 to 5 year olds. Nancy and Judy read stories to the children and then do a craft with them, providing snacks and fun! Thursday, December 18th they will be reading My Penguin Osbert by Elizabeth Cody Kimmel. The craft for that program will be creating penguin snow measures so you can tell how deep the snow is outside!

Special Hours for the Holidays: The library will be closed Wednesday, December 24th through Friday, December 26th for Christmas. We will also be closed Wednesday, Decmeber 31st and Thursday, January 1st for New Year’s. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year!!

Rock Band 2 has arrived

We have added a new game to our X-Box 360, Rock Band 2. For now, instead of playing Guitar Hero III on Wednesdays from 4pm-6pm, we will be substituting Rock Band. Some time in January, we will discuss with the players which they prefer, and how they wish to handle having two different music based games.

Our teen gaming times are open to any teen (ages 10-18) who wishes to join in the play. Games run on Wednesdays from 4pm-6pm (for Rock Band 2/Guitar Hero III) and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm (for Halo III).

Clickers!

Clickers! has been meeting for three weeks now, and everyone seems to be enjoying it.  Although at the moment we are focused primarily on Knit and Crochet, we would gladly welcome anyone with other handicrafts to join us to teach, learn and share.

We have taught both knitting and crocheting to people of all ages, have come in and shared patterns, techniques, and just plain sat and worked on projects while chatting with others who enjoy old-fashioned needlecrafts.

Some of the projects in process are: scarves, mittens, dishcloths, a prayer shawl, and scrubbies. Several people have crocheted beaded necklaces, and others have made ornaments for the library Christmas Tree. Our ambition this year is to make all the ornaments for the tree.

Due to Thanksgiving, we won't be meeting on the 26th of November. Instead, we will meet again on Dec. 3, 2008. Everyone is welcome to come in and join us. We should have extra yarn and needles available if you don't have your own, so feel free just to drop by and see what we are up to.

Remember, this group is for anyone: boys, girls, young, old, anyone who is interested at all! Don’t be shy!

Monday, November 24th is Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library’s next Lit & Latte book discussion group for teens! The book this time is Code Orange by Caroline B. Cooney. This book follows Mitty, a high school goof-off. He is a poor student who is more plugged into his music than his schoolwork. He is only taking Advanced Biology because of he wants to be in the same class as the fair Olivia. He works just hard enough to get by which is why he has not started his research paper on infectious diseases. While looking through some very old medical books he discovers an envelope marked VM. Inside are two nasty, ancient scabs, which he examines and handles. His research leads him to the meaning of VM...variola major or smallpox. He cheerfully sets off to research smallpox for his report but as his knowledge of the disease grows so does the dawning horror that he has handled and inhaled the dust from the scabs. Is the virus still viable after all this time? Has Mitty contracted the disease and is he spreading it around his beloved New York City? Are his symptoms real, or is he imagining things? Stop by the library to pick up a copy of Code Orange and then come join our book discussion at the library at 3:30 p.m.!

Thursday, November 20th at 11 a.m. come to Toddler Time with our staff member Judy! This week we’ll be reading Happy Thanksgiving, Biscuit! by Alyssa Capucilli and playing with stickers! Christmas in November and More!

Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library has started a new procedure for checking out DVD’s. You can browse through the cases of our DVD collection and when you find the ones you’d like to borrow, just take the cases to the Circulation Desk and we will provide you with the corresponding DVD’s. Remember it only costs 50 cents to borrow a movie for two whole days!

We’ve had to start this new process of lending DVD’s due to the large volume of movies that have been stolen from us. The most recent months have been the worst. Everyone suffers in harsh economic times and that does not exclude libraries. Here is a list of all the titles we are missing:

1 Aliens vs. Predators
2 Annapolis
3 Are We There Yet
4 Babel
5 Catch and Release
6 Charlotte's Web
7 Cheaper By The Dozen
8 Cheaper By The Dozen 2

12 The Death of The Incredible Hulk
13 Elvis: King of Entertainment
14 Rare Moments with the King Elvis Presley
15 Dreamgirls

17 Georgia Rule
18 Ghost Rider
19 Glory Road
20 Going Overboard

65 Where the Red Fern Grows: Part Two
66 The Wild
67 World Trade Center

If you know anyone who might be in possession of any of these DVD’s please ask them to return them to the library. Anyone can drop them off anonymously using our Book Drop on the side of the building. We do not care who took them, we would just like them returned so that other people can enjoy them. The average cost of a DVD including processing here at the library to get them ready for lending is roughly $20. Take that cost and multiply it by 67 DVD’s and you have a total of $1,340 worth of materials that have been stolen. I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that this is a shame. Help us make this right by returning any DVD’s or asking anyone you know who has them to return them.

Our new knitting and crocheting group, the Clickers, will be meeting again on Wednesday, November 12th at 6:30 here in the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library Community Room. Ever wanted to learn how to knit or crochet? Are you currently working on knitting or crocheting projects? Perhaps you have a few pearls of wisdom about these fun activities that you’d like to share? If you can answer yes to any of these questions then you should come hang out with us! This new group is open to all ages. If you have any questions call Nancy or Judy at 473-3800.

Be sure to stop by the library during our Christmas in November weekend starting Thursday, November 6th and going until Saturday, November 8th! We will have special hours those three days where we will open at 9 AM and close at 5 PM. We will have a variety of vendors here including Liz Montomery who will have Beany Babies for all you Beany Baby fanatics out there! Ever wondered about Pampered Chef? Wanna know more? Mindy Carnathan will be here all three days to answer questions, set up parties, and show off some goods! We have a few others coming as well! We hope to see you!

Last but not least, don’t forget about the Third Annual Clarion County Live & Silent Auction at the American Legion on Main St. in Clarion, PA on Friday, November 7th! Each year the CCLS puts on an Evening of Bidding, Mingling, and Music in efforts to raise money for the Summer Reading Programs of the five libraries of the county. Thanks to all the wonderful attendees and bidders last year each library was able to obtain over $700 in proceeds! Those funds greatly helped the libraries purchase supplies like books, t-shirts, activity items, and snacks for the kids, as well as prizes and awards for the end of the summer.

The evening will begin with appetizers, a cash bar, and then the auction. So far there are a myriad of items to be auctioned off including stools, benches, boxes, chairs, windows, and more! Each item is hand-painted by artists from around the area in accordance with a theme from a chosen children’s book. You can imagine some of the great works of art this blend of craftiness produces! And just think! You could own one!

Following the auction a DJ will be providing great music so you can dance the night away! Doors will open Friday, November 7th at 6:30 PM and the Auction will begin at 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased from any of the 5 libraries in the county for just $10 per person. This cost includes admittance, refreshments, and great entertainment! If you’re all booked up that night but still want to support your local libraries and children’s reading programs feel free to stop by your local library and donate $10 for a ticket. Your community will thank you! If you have any questions contact Jessica Modrzejewski, System Administrator at 226-6340!

November Adult Book Discussion - We will be discussing The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This novel follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. The library still has several copies of this book available for a small donation of $10. The discussion questions are conveniently located in the back of the book! Pick up a copy and join us on Thursday, November 13th at 7 PM right here in the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library Community Room.

The holiday season is quickly approaching. Need a great unique way to show someone you care? Place a book in honor of them here at the library! All you need is a minimal donation of $25 and a special plate will be placed inside the book of your choice. You can also specify certain subject matter such as family, music, etc., and let the library choose a great title for you! We also offer Memorial Bricks for $100 donations. What better way to acknowledge a library or book lover than to have their name permanently displayed on our Commemorative Wall right at the heart of our library?

Computer Classes running

The library and the Clarion County Literacy Council are currently partnering to offer basic computer literacy classes to the public. At this time, there are 3 classes running: Mondays from 12-2 and from 2-4, and Tuesdays from 2-4.

The library computer lab is closed to the public during these classes, and the teachers are provided by the Literacy Council, with the aid of one of the members of the Rimersburg Friends of the Library, Lesa Byers.

Anyone interested in these classes should contact the Clarion County Literacy Council at 814-226-4626

X-Box games starting again.

The library will once again be hosting the X-Box games Guitar Hero III and Halo III. The X-Box will be set up for Guitar Hero III on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, and for Halo III on Thursdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

The games will be open to all teens who have a permission slip on file. Those who participated in during the summer already have a slip on file. Anyone who wishes to start will be welcome to pick up a slip at the front desk of the library.

We hope to have a team vs. team tournament in Halo III at the end of the school year. Further details will be announced later, and will also be posted at the library.

The Library starts a new blog

The Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library is beginning to add Web 2.0 features to its web site beginning with a blog. This blog will be updated by all staff members on a regular schedule beginning October, 2008.

The Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library is a small, rural library located in Rimersburg, PA. The library serves seven small communities in Southern Clarion County.

We welcome comments and suggestions on how to improve library services to our community.
