Some Updates for October!

September was Library Card Sign-Up Month. We had 32 people get new library cards! All names were put into a drawing for a large pizza and the winner was Dylan Griffin of Sligo! We’d like to welcome everyone to the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library Family!

Also in September we held our first Adult Book Discussion of the season and we were fortunate to have local author Kim Armstrong of Parker, PA come and discuss her book, Hope and Healing: A Nurse’s Story. We had a wonderful turn out and a great discussion led by Karen Jordan. Next up in November we will be discussing The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This novel follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. The library still has several copies of this book available for a small donation of $10. The discussion questions are conveniently located in the back of the book! Pick up a copy and join us on Thursday, November 13th at 7 PM right here in the Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library Community Room.

Attention Teens of the Area – Guitar Hero III and Halo III are back! On Wednesdays stop into the library between 4 pm and 6 pm to play Guitar Hero, or if you prefer Halo stop in on Thursdays between 4 and 6 pm. Our Community Room is set up with a TV and XBox connected to a projector so you can play up on the wall! You must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian to participate. Pick up a slip at the circulation desk today and come play!

We also have our first Teen Book Discussion group in the month of October! Lit & Latte is scheduled for 3:30 pm on Monday, October 27th. Sharon Custer, our Reference and Technical Librarian, will lead a discussion on the book Peak by Roland Smith. Anyone interested in joining in can pick up a copy of the book here at the library. Then come hang out at the book discussion and enjoy some tasty hot beverages!

Help the library! We still need several vendors for our Christmas in November weekend! Each year vendors come and set up tables of goods and wares to sell, raffle off chances to win prizes, and provide all kinds of information on local merchants. This year we still have many open tables available. The cost is $10 a day or $25 for three days starting Thursday, November 6th, lasting until Saturday, November 8th. Please contact the library at 473-3800 if you are interested.

Ever wanted to learn how to knit or crochet? Are you currently working on knitting or crocheting projects? Perhaps you have a few pearls of wisdom about these fun activities that you’d like to share? If you can answer yes to any of these questions then you should set the date of October 27th aside! Come hang out with us at 6:30 pm for the Clickers! This is a new group that’s open to all ages to come and hang out at the library and work on fun projects. If you have any questions call Nancy or Judy at the library at 473-3800.

Community Action, Inc. will be at the library on Monday, October 20th from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm providing information and services. Community Action, Inc. provides a wide variety of programs and assistance to individuals in Clarion County, from educational programs to monetary assistance and food banks. They will continue to visit Eccles-Lesher Memorial Library on the first Friday of each month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come on down to the library and see what services they could provide for you!
